ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNICIAN FOR HABITAT RESTORATION AND INVASIVE SPECIES CONTROL

Description: This position requires an individual who desires to work predominately outdoors, interacts well with others and can also work independently. Successful applicants must be capable of being able to improvise, adapt and overcome challenging situations while working in remote locations.

Environmental Technicians are responsible for treating invasive exotic plants utilizing a variety of techniques including chemical, mechanical and physical methods. Must be able to accurately mix, load and apply herbicides safely, maintain equipment associated with application and survey and monitor treated areas. Technicians are responsible for plant identification including exotic look-alike and native plant species. Travel will be continuous and encompass all areas within Florida, with certain projects requiring out of state travel. Extended hours in variable weather conditions are often encountered. Must be highly flexible, possess a strong work ethic and have a good attitude.

Training/Educational Opportunities: Applicant will have the opportunity to participate in seminars or training sessions regarding: Invasive plant removal techniques; first aid; chainsaw safety; pesticide safety; application equipment; ATV use and orienteering. There will be opportunities to visit many culturally and historically significant sites; attend educational workshops and work alongside professionals involved in many different areas of environmental and resource management.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Provide evidence of a high school diploma along with the active pursuit of a college degree in environmental science, biological science, ecology, forestry, natural resources or wildlife management

  • Possess Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS) applicator license in Aquatic and Natural Areas categories

  • Demonstrate knowledge of and experience working in and aroundhostile terrain, poisonous plants and animals, and biting insects

  • Exhibit ability to withstand long hours of physically challenging work in adverse tropical conditions which include high temperatures,humidity, wind and rain

  • Display valid Florida driver’s license and a clean driving record

  • Express his/her willingness to travel throughout the State of Florida and the US for work, including overnight stays

  • Have a positive attitude

  • Exhibit a basic understanding of mechanical functions and their applications

  • Demonstrate a genuine desire and physical ability to work outdoors approximately 75% of the time

  • Exhibit excellent oral and written communication skills, with bilingual (English/Spanish) abilities ideal

  • Possess a working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, and ARC GIS

  • Have the ability to complete Daily Progress Reports (DPRs) for each job properly and deliver to the EQI Project Manager for QA/QC

  • Demonstrate familiarity with invasive plant management protocols

  • Demonstrate knowledge of native plants and wildlife

  • Participate in daily inspection and maintenance of truck, equipment and safety equipment for himself/herself and project teammates
